Cooking Up Confidence: Recapping Our Kid Food Nation Journey!
Empowering Young Chefs in the Kitchen
What happens when you give kids a mixing spoon, fresh ingredients, and a dash of culinary inspiration? You get an amazing cohort of confident, capable young chefs!
Our club members recently wrapped up an incredible journey participating in Kid Food Nation, a national program created by BGC Canada and generously supported by BMO. Over the course of 8 weeks, our youth stepped away from the screens and dove headfirst into the delicious world of food literacy.
Designed specifically for youth, Kid Food Nation helps children build essential cooking and food literacy skills in a fun, engaging, and hands-on environment.
From Kitchen Basics to Culinary Mastery
This 8-week journey was all about practical growth. Our club members started with foundational kitchen safety and graduated to creating their very own nutritious dishes. Through this program, children gained valuable knowledge in:
- Healthy Eating Habits: Understanding how to fuel their bodies with wholesome, fresh foods.
- Food Literacy: Learning where their food comes from and how to identify different ingredients.
- Practical Kitchen Skills: Gaining hands-on practice with chopping, mixing, and safely navigating a cooking space.
Watching them grow from tentative beginners into independent, enthusiastic kitchen helpers has been an absolute joy for our staff and volunteers.
“Why Does the Program Have to End?”
If you want to know just how much our youth loved this experience, you only have to look at their final reactions on graduation day. When the 8 weeks drew to a close, the children’s final words were:
“WHY DOES THE PROGRAM HAVE TO END? WE WANT TO LEARN AND COOK MORE!”
It’s safe to say the cooking bug has bitten our club members, and we couldn’t be prouder of their curiosity and drive to keep learning.
“My son looks forward to every session, he loves what he cook and is always asking to take more cooking classes. He’s very sad the program is ending.”
— Parent of a 12 year old boy
“Her father and I are so pleased to see that our daughter is building confidence in the kitchen. She’s learning how to read recipes, cook independently, and practice important kitchen safety skills. She’s even been helping us at home”
— Parent of a 9 year old girl
“She is truly enjoying the program and loves the opportunity to cook alongside her friends. It’s been a wonderful experience for her. Please don’t let this program ever end! It’s so important for children and youth.”
— Parent of a 12 year old girl
