Programs Offered in the Youth Employment Strategy
Urban Street Grill (Ages 12-13)
The Urban Street Grill is our revamped summer employment program, previously known as the Hot Dog Cart. Youth aged 12-13 will work with staff to plan and operate the Urban Street Grill, serving delicious street food at events across Fort Saskatchewan.
Participants will receive an honorarium for their work and gain hands-on experience in areas such as:
- Safe Food Handling
- Customer Service
- Menu Planning and food supply shopping
- Money Handling
- Teamwork
The Urban Street Grill is more than just a food service program; it’s an opportunity for youth to develop practical skills that will serve them well in future employment and life.
Youth Employment Program (YEP) (Ages 14-17)
The Youth Employment Program (YEP) offers youth aged 14-17 the chance to gain real-world work experience through a six-week summer placement. Participants spend the first two weeks learning important job and life skills before being matched with a local business for a four-week work placement.
During their placement, youth will work 20 hours weekly and receive an honorarium weekly. This program gives youth practical tools and experiences that will help shape their future career paths.
What youth will learn:
- How to create cover letters and resumes
- Interview skills to prepare for the job market
- Real-world work experience through a local job placement
- Exploration of future education, career, and life goals
